This is an autochthonous race, purebred and with a registered
pedigree.
The herd presently consists of one bull to service around 50
breeding cows, plus 10 milk cows and around 20 heifers, in addition
to about another twenty bullocks.
The herd is almost totally left free to roam.
When necessary the puerperal cows are kept in the cattle sheds,
together with those animals having to undergo veterinary exams,
animals ready for slaughter or for sale to other breeders, and
lastly the young animals which have just been weaned and have
to get used to new feeding methods before being sent out to
graze freely.
Periodically the heifers have to undergo a morphological evaluation
and those with the highest score are kept for breeding, thus
maintaining the highest possible level of the breed. The remaining
animals are sent for slaughter.
The average life of a breeding cow is around 16 years. Due to
reasons of consanguinity, the bull is substituted about every
four years.
New bulls are purchased from the San Martini in Colle Genetic
Centre in Perugia (ANABICwww.anabic.it)
where selection is made of the best animals available from
the various breeders.
